Here you will find echoes of history dance with the pulse of modern life.

‘Ruthin is unique... there was a time when the towns of Wales sparkled with black and white houses. Now [writes Peter Smith] only Ruthin remains’.

Among our storied structures, the oldest dated timber-framed residence beckons. Almost adjacent and almost as old is open-to-the public Nantclwyd y Dre. Its façade, a patchwork of aged wood, tells tales of generations who have called it home.

Just a stone’s throw away, if you ignore the horrid clusters of parked cars, lies the world-class St Peter’s Square, the vibrant hub of our town. The Square with its views to the green hills of the west, is framed by the imposing Castle Hotel, open-in-the-summer grand Old Courthouse and fine St Peter’s Church [closed in 2025 for refurbishment].

Stroll around and marvel as the liberal sprinkling of green plaques catches the eye, each marking a significant moment in history. They serve as gentle reminders of the rich tapestry of life that has unfolded in this charming town, inviting curiosity and reflection. As does the Art Trail. The charm of the conservation area and crammed with listed buildings create a picturesque tableau that invites both locals and visitors to pause and admire.

Admire the handsome portico with Doric arches at another former Courthouse (now the Library), a striking architectural feature that commands attention. The arches, sturdy and elegant, frame the entrance to what is now the Library (check opening times!) where contemporary life breathes new life into the age-old walls. Or, ponder the curve of Pendref Chapel stands as a serene counterpoint to the rich streets.
The modern statement that is the Craft Centre stands as a testament to the artistry of the present. It offers a a unique tapestry of craftsmanship, rising proudly and home to whispered stories of modern day artisans.

In this enchanting and ancient market town, the modernity of the Craft Centre intertwines seamlessly with the charm of its timber-framed buildings and the grandeur of its streets.

It is a place where every corner holds a story, and every building is a chapter in the ongoing narrative of a community that cherishes its heritage while embracing the future.
